Most counties still lack websites
SunshineReview.org is out with an update on the transparency of county websites and the news is not good: only eight of the 77 counties get a passing grade. The big problem is that 57 counties don’t even have a website, a basic form of communication in today’s society. And the problem is not a question of rural versus urban: Cleveland County has no central website (although the Assessor, Clerk and Treasurer do have a web presence) while Beaver and Murray Counties do.
Taxpayers have the right to know what their elected officials and those they have hired are doing with their money. It’s not asking too much to have contact information, budget documents, meeting agendas and other information posted on the web for everyone to see.
Oklahomans should be apalled that three-quarters of counties don’t even have a website. They should demand that counties open themselves up to scrutiny.
